Authors can only create and edit their own posts. You can see a member's status in the "Permissions" section of the Settings | Basic tab, and it looks like this:

According to Google site, invited authors to a blog can only create and edit their own posts-- might be perfect for a class? http://support.google.com/blogger/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=41441
