date formatting in Excel

Sometimes, it's useful to just have a reminder of the formatting Excel uses for dates.

Months:
  • 01 = mm (numeric form)
  • Jan = mmm (short month name)
  • January = mmmm (full month name)
Days:
  • 28 = dd (numeric date)
  • Sun = ddd (shortened weekday name)
  • Sunday = dddd (full weekday name)
Year:
  • 13 = yy (year in two numbers)
  • 2013 = yyyy (full four numbers)
STYLE
FORMAT
01/13/13
 mm/dd/yy
 01/13/2013
 mm/dd/yyyy
Jan 13, 2013
 mmm dd, yyyy
January 13, 2013
 mmmm dd, yyyy
Sun., Jan 13, 2013
 ddd., mmm dd, yyyy
Sun, January 13, 2013
 ddd., mmmm dd, yyyy
Sunday, Jan 13, 2013
 dddd, mmm dd, yyyy
Sunday, January 13, 2013

You get the idea....
